Beowulf: Age of Heroes (5e)

When Campaign Coins experienced a slowdown due to a drop in in-person roleplaying, we wanted to show our tokens in action in online games.

With just my colleague Mark and me available to stream at first, Beowulf: Age of Heroes from Handiwork Games was the perfect choice – a 5e ruleset written for one DM and one player.

With only two players and a focus on physical props, I made a stream overlay featuring a table cam (with a feed from Mark’s phone) to show off Beowulf Inspiration Tokens and the official miniatures. There was also plenty of space for Jon Hodgson‘s beautiful NPC, handout, and environment paintings.

By keeping episodes to an hour each, I took a few sessions to play through The Hermit’s Sanctuary as Bald Eadig. Later in the year we welcomed my Stream of Chaos castmate Alex to take the spotlight as Blaedswith in Horror at Herrogate.

I really enjoyed facilitating Alex & Mark’s game from behind the scenes, as I could focus on driving the animations and assets I had built into the overlay. I later built on what I’d learned by adding even more bells and whistles for our Shadow of the Demon Lord games.
