Deviser, Actor, Musician, Sound Designer • 2017
One of my final-year productions at the National Theatre Drama School, I Will Not Be Here Long was an abstract piece devised, produced, and performed entirely by the graduating class.
As a class, we were responsible for all aspects of the show, including sets, costumes, promotion, and ticketing.
In addition to performing in the ensemble, I was responsible for sound design and music licensing.
A hotel in the Australian outback welcomes its reluctant guests, each with a different longing that has led them to this strange place.
Inspired by Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, I Will Not Be Here Long explores the impact of isolation on customs and intimate relationships, and the ‘haunting’ of ex-lovers. I Will Not Be Here Long is a movement rich ensemble work, that lives in the realm of magic-realism.
This is desert-roads, RM Williams boots, a shoddy motel sign from a nightmare you once had. It’s the feeling you get when you travel in the middle of the night. The kind of heat that stills everything around you. A dog that won’t stop barking. This is a town that exists only in nostalgia, a memory that was never made.
‘We don’t in general take to foreigners here.’
Review
On the technical side, the play is spectacular.
The direction, lighting and sound design come together to create a show with an unrelenting energy. […]
If you have ever loved at all, or felt loss of any kind, or even just experienced something simply end without explanation, then you will find something to recognise here.
